Is Christian America Finally Standing Up To Secularism?

January 3, 2012

The Christian Community Of Athens, TX stood their ground and kept their Nativity Scene

Has Christian America finally got there? Are we finally fed up? Are we finally going to stand up for Christ and say “We have had it and we are not going to take anymore?”

“There is no ‘separation of church and state’ mandated in our constitution. Barack Obama is wrong – America was founded as, and continues to be, a Christian Nation.”

“We will no longer stand silent as our government, at the behest of a minority of atheists and secularists, suppresses all expressions of the Christian Faith in our government buildings, our town squares, our national parks and national cemeteries.”

The Christian community in Athens, TX took that stand when they refused to remove their traditional Nativity Scene standing in front of the Henderson County Courthouse. And they won. The question is, will Christian America build upon this victory in 2012?

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, Madison, WI, specializes in threatening and suing small communities over public expressions of Christianity such as Crosses, Nativity Scenes, depictions of the Ten Commandments, etc. Fearing the cost of a lengthy legal battle likely to involve a series of appeals, the town or village usually simply surrenders and removes the “offending” reference.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation has no fear of incurring legal fees, no matter how long any of their lawsuits may continue. The ACLU is always eager to sue on behalf of atheists, pro-bono.

The FFRF recently threatened the borough of Ellwood City, PA with a federal lawsuit over their Nativity display. The borough council decided to remove the display. The FFRF no doubt expected Athens, TX to fold just as quickly.

The Christian community of Henderson County, however, was quick to stand up for their Faith. Rallies of 5,000+ demonstrators in support of maintaining the Nativity Scene took place in front of the Courthouse.

The city council consulted County Judge Richard Sanders, who opined that a Nativity Scene was not a violation of federal law. Texas Attorney General Gregory Abbott promised state assistance in filing legal briefs in the event of any suit filed by FFRF. Athens, TX held its ground.

Caught by surprise, and rightly assuming no Texas judge was about to order state troopers to tear down a Nativity display, the Freedom From Religion Foundation tried to save face by offering a compromise in which they would be allowed to post a banner next to the Nativity Scene which would read “At this season of the Winter Solstice, let reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth & superstition that hardens hearts & enslaves minds.”

The city council showed the FFRF a finger, so to speak, and refused to even discuss the proposal. And that was that. The people of Athens, TX kept their Nativity Scene.

Leading the Athens rallies, Baptist Pastor Nathan Lorick correctly refuted the “church and state” lie – “First of all, [the separation of] church and state is not found in the Constitution. As far as legal issues, we believe we are within our constitutional right.”

In this clip, Pastor Lorick reminds Christian America that “…Jesus is still our Lord. It’s time for us to stand together and protect the very principles that made this nation great…”, and that “America needs God”.

Amen, Pastor Lorick. Amen, Amen! These same exhortations to defend and promote our Faith need to be preached from every pulpit in America.

We are witnessing the collapse of our country, and no politician, no matter how Christian or conservative, will be able to pull us back from the brink if Christian America continues to fail to stand up to the forces of liberalism and secularism, and the associated moral evils we see enveloping our nation.

As Pastor Lorick summarizes so succinctly, “America needs God.” It is we who have turned our backs to Him, and God is waiting for us to take that first step back toward Him. The Christian community of Henderson County, TX has taken that step. Does the rest of Christian America have the courage to stand with them? The coming year will tell.

But judging by the state or our nation, God may be getting tired of waiting.
