Obama’s Ill Fated War On The Catholic Church

January 25, 2012

The president has badly underestimated Catholic resolve on religious liberty and life

Barack Obama has had it with the Catholic Church.

Socialism has always rightly viewed Christianity as a mortal enemy. As a committed socialist ideologue, the president is keenly aware that, historically, the Catholic Church has often been a fatal thorn in the side of socialist governments. And the hopes of those aspiring to implement one.

The US Conference Of Catholic Bishops was certainly such a thorn in their opposition to Mr Obama’s abortion promulgating healthcare takeover. Catholics lobby legislators to oppose the perversion of homosexual marriage. The Catholic Church has laid bare the false science and empty promises of stem cell research, which has not produced one viable cure or therapy in 32 years.

The Catholic Church, in short, opposes the Obama socialist worldview that governments exist to regulate every aspect of the lives of the citizenry, including freedom of religion and the very right to life itself. Such defiance is something the President has decided he can no longer tolerate.

But in attempting to bring the Catholic Church under government’s heel through his “free contraception mandate”, Mr Obama has initiated a confrontation with the conscience of Catholics he is sure to lose.

In The Message Behind The Pill Mandate, we stated that HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ August edict mandating all health insurance plans to automatically cover contraception, including abortifacient drugs and sterilizations, was nothing less than a direct assault on the freedom of religion, specifically the Catholic Church.

Most Catholics, including many Bishops, foolishly assumed that traditionally honored Conscience Clauses would exempt Catholic institutions. Foolish in their naiveté over Barack Obama. On Friday Sebelius made it clear that there would be no conscience exemptions to the Pill Mandate, and that Catholic Dioceses and Catholic based organizations have one year to bring their insurance plans in compliance.

President Obama’s hope is to establish a heretofore unimagined precedent in America – making religion subservient to the dictates of government. He has decided that he is the man to settle the question of church and state permanently – in state’s favor.

But Barack Obama has badly underestimated the resolve of the 2,000 year old Catholic Church and Catholics in general. The Vatican and the USCCB have gone the extra mile in extending the hand of friendship, and the benefit of the doubt, to Mr Obama as our president.

The president has foolishly and arrogantly taken these gestures as a sign of weakness and apparently decided he is in a position to pluck the Catholic thorn from his side. If he can make the Bishops submit on the mandate, they will lose their moral authority in the eyes of the Catholic faithful and completely undercut Church teaching on life.

But the president has overplayed a paltry hand. He has already lost his war. The Catholic Church will never surrender on the principle of religious freedom. Never back down on the right to life. True Catholics will not even consider compromising their faith or consciences to the dictates of government, no matter what the price, as Father Frank Pavone makes clear here

Government mandate? Jesus warned that even the gates of hell would never prevail against His Church.

What chance has the likes of Barack Obama?
