Where Is The Catholic Church?
November 12, 2008
It’s time to take a stand against pro-abortion Catholic legislators
The Catholic Church and Protestant Christian Evangelicals have been the principal proponents in the struggle on behalf of America’s helpless unborn children since the unconstitutional supreme court decision Roe v Wade became a blight upon our nation.
Yet some 55% of Catholic voters supported Barack Obama, a candidate whose stated “first priority” in office will be to sign the Freedom OF Choice Act, legislation which will restore partial birth abortion and invalidate all federal and state restrictions on abortion in America.
With the FOCA now threatening America’s unborn, it is time for the Catholic Church to take a stand. It is time to draw the line and make a few examples of Catholic politicians and academics who flaunt their contempt for the Catholic commitment to the sanctity of life and who encourage other Catholics to do also.
Catholic legislators and judges who have facilitated millions of abortions over the years continue to accept Communion without shame, or admonition from the Church. Catholics speaker Pelosi and candidate Biden repeatedly distorted, make that lied about, the Vatican’s position on life at conception throughout the campaign.
A Jesuit priest, Rev Raymond Schroth, and Notre Dame theology professor Cathleen Kaveny were among dozens of Catholic academics who publicly scorned the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ publication on Faithful Citizenship, which emphasized the Church’s position on abortion and made clear the duty of Catholics to vote for pro-life candidates. Douglas Kmiec, former dean of the Catholic University of America repudiated the bishops, stating the publication exhibited “low partisanship”. Nicholas Cafardi, of Catholic college Duquesne University, stated “we have lost the abortion battle, permanently”, implying there was no longer any reason Catholics should be dissuaded from supporting pro-abortion candidates.
Catholic Universities held pro-Obama rallies. On the night before the election, Xavier University, a Jesuit college in Cincinnati, hosted an event at which hip hopper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and rapper “Diddy” Combs exhorted students to get out the vote for Obama. Professors at Georgetown University, also a Jesuit college, raised $179,000 for Obama’s campaign. (some of these Jesuit colleges could use a visit from a Vatican house cleaner)
The Catholic Church considers an abortion to be the murder of an innocent child. Article 2272 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church states “Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life”.
There is no ambiguity here, no “choice”. A Catholic woman procuring a abortion, and any Catholic facilitating that abortion, are automatically excommunicated- cut off from the Church, the sacraments and salvation.
And as Father John Corapi, SOLT, has pointed out, if one abortion is murder, the 50 million abortions carried out since Roe constitute nothing less than genocide. A genocide facilitated, in part, by Catholic legislators and judges. Genocide condoned, and even promoted, by Catholic academics in Catholic Universities.
How could the majority of Catholic voters support a committed FOCA candidate for president? The Church has no further to look than the lack of firm leadership and commitment of its own cardinals and bishops. One woman involved in the procurement of a single abortion, and anyone who may have helped her, stand excommunicate, while the politicians and judges who helped codify the genocide of millions are granted the sacraments. Indeed, these Catholic politicians proudly campaign on having voted for, and defended, “abortion rights”. Many, ala Pelosi and Biden, knowingly lie to Catholic voters on the Church’s Catechism in order to manipulate them to vote contrary to their clear duty as Catholics.
So the Catholic faithful, and the millions of others in America committed to ending the barbarous murder of infants in the womb, ask in despair “where is the Catholic Church?” When will the Church hierarchy stand firm for the helpless unborn and confront the Catholic abortion enablers in congress and the judiciary in no uncertain terms?
The looming threat of the Freedom Of Choice Act virtually makes it a now or never decision. The Church has no choice but to make clear that any Catholic legislator who casts a vote for the FOCA will do so at the peril of their soul- excommunication.
And for emphasis, an example should be made. How about a couple of old fashioned public excommunications, as in the movie Beckett, with the symbolic breaking of candles? The arrogant and deceitful Ms Pelosi and Mr Biden would serve quite nicely. Maybe the Wickens will be more to their liking.
