Feminists Fraying At The Edges
Attacking The Family
Pro-life sentiment continues to build in America and feminists are fraying at the edges. Their spokespersons are becoming unglued. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Not with Barack Obama in the White House.
In 2007, Michelle Obama personally wrote to every major pro-abortion group promising that husband Barack would be their man on the “Freedom Of Choice Act”. The FOCA would have rescinded the federal ban on partial birth abortion, the Hyde Amendment ban on federally funded abortions and all existing state laws providing common sense/decency restrictions on abortion. The landscape for a feminist nirvana and a multi-billion dollar windfall for Abortion Incorporated.
Candidate Obama had promised Planned Parenthood that “the first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act”, and sweet baby Barack instantly became the heartthrob of every NOW babe, the leading star of Women’s Media Center and first choice on EMILY’s list.
But as president, Barack Obama hasn’t fulfilled feminism’s fantasies. The radical brutality of the FOCA is even opposed by most pro-choice voters and congress wasn’t about to take it up. And contrary to expectations, the majority of Americans now label themselves as pro-life, state legislatures continue to pass those common sense/decency restrictions that provoke feminist ire and pro-life/pro-family positions are receiving major media exposure.
The final bitter straw may very well be watching feminism’s hoped for expansion of abortion in America, under the guise of “healthcare benefits”, go down the drain with Obamacare, or blocked by the Stupak-Pitts Amendment.
Strong and invincible though they may be, the culminative effects of these small pro-life victories seem to be taking a toll on the feminist psyche. The pressure is bringing out feminists’ true colors as they resort to their traditional fall back position. Suppression of the truth and free speech.
“Un-American hate”
A perfect example is Ms Jehmu Greene, president of Women’s Media Center, seen in this video trying to justify, in rather unlady like fashion, Women Media Center’s tactics in suppressing Dr James Dobson’s organization Focus On The Family’s and their “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life” campaign. As can be seen, Ms Greene has an obsessive fixation on Focus On The Family. The organization, she fears, is “luring” young people to their website where they will be brainwashed into deciding not to have abortions, or opposing two lumberjacks from Axmen tying the knot.
It was also Ms Greene’s Women’s Media Center that voiced the most vitriolic opposition to the Tim and Pamela Tebow Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life Super Bowl commercial. WMC’s fear was that the Tebow ad might actually encourage women contemplating abortion to consider bringing their children into the world. WMC headed a petition to CBS to drop the 30 second spot which they labeled as “un-American hate”.
The Tebow ad, as it turned out, did not even mention the word abortion or the phrase “pro-life”, and was generally well received as positive, tasteful and humorous. The only hate feminists could point to was Pam Tebow’s reference to son Tim as a “miracle baby”.
Actually, Focus On The Family only spends approximately 10% of their budget on right to life and traditional marriage issues. But Women’s Media Center’s determined assault against Focus On The Family has continued relentlessly, simply because the traditional American family represents a threat to liberalism. And liberalism is what feminism has always really been about.
WMC managed to scrape out a minor victory when the NCAA caved. But what the Ms Greenes of the distant left are really bemoaning is the gradual erosion of public support for liberalism and the feminist false idol of abortion. Especially on the college campuses of America. And it scares them.
So feminists are being forced to ratchet up the assaults on free speech. Like all liberals, they know they will always lose a debate that centers on the facts.
But those once incredibly powerful phrases anti-choice, anti-women, anti-”inclusive” and homophobic have all been so overused they no longer have any meaning or carry any impact. Maybe Women’s Media Center can come up with a new zinger for their next campaign to suppress free speech.
“Hey, Hey. Ho, Ho. The American family has got to go.”
Ultimately that may be feminism’s only hope.
