40 Days For Life Campaign Spring 2011

March 8, 2011

We were meant to live during this time

Anyone interested in saving 400 babies from the vacuums, surgical shears and poisons of America’s abortion mills over the next 7 weeks? How about inspiring 5 abortion clinic employees to walk out on their jobs? Or having an instrumental part in the permanent closing of one abortion clinic? All without even having to raise your voice above a prayer?

That is the magnitude of the opportunity to impact the pro-live cause offered by this Spring’s 40 Day’s For Life Campaign. On average, those are the victories achieved by each of the semi-annual 40 Day Campaigns.

But the true beauty of the 40 Days prayer based campaigns is that everyone can participate no matter where you live. While not everyone will be able to participate in prayer vigils before clinics, every Christian can personally commit to prayer and some type of fasting to end the scourge of abortion plaguing our nation.

Each campaign, therefore, literally consists of millions of God’s elect crying out to Him day and night for justice for the unborn.

The spring campaign appropriately coincides with lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday, March 9 and ending Palm Sunday, April.

Abortion is an intrinsic evil plaguing America. The killing of our children, insidiously cloaked as a freedom by Satan, the “father of liars” (John 8:22). Evil of such depth, Jesus tells us, “does not come out except by prayer and fasting”. (Matthew 17:21)

The three paths to overcoming abortion
Simple prayer is our most powerful weapon in the struggle to end abortion. The abortion industry spends millions of dollars annually funding pro-abortion organizations and financing the campaigns of pro-abortion government officials. Yet the grass roots pro-life community is slowly, but inexorably, winning the battle. The majority of Americans now consider themselves to be pro-life. And the only possible explanation is the power of Almighty God, invoked through prayer.

The 40 Days For Life website offers a series of Daily Devotionals to be prayed throughout the fall campaign. Each Devotion consists of an Intention, a Scripture passage, a Reflection and a Prayer composed by a clerical or a lay member of the 40 Days Leadership Team.

Fasting is another powerful, yet under utilized, Christian resource. Often misinterpreted as simply going hungry, fasting is a form of prayer by which we deny ourselves things in order to focus more of our attention upon God, His will and His plan for each of us. Fasting is simply abstaining from any enjoyable activity that we consider part of our lives- food, television, recreation, etc. During the 40 Days For Life we offer this abstinence to God as one aspect of our commitment to saving the lives of His unborn children, our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Peaceful activism, in the form of prayer vigils and community outreach programs, has become the visible symbol of the pro-life movement. During the spring campaign, Constant Prayer Vigils are conducted in front of abortion clinics in the 247 targeted cities. If possible volunteers maintain the vigils 24 hours a day throughout the 40 Days, or at least during a clinic’s business hours. Trained “sidewalk counselors” offer women entering the clinics alternatives to abortion by handing out pamphlets detailing the medical, psychological and financial assistance offered by local Pregnancy Crisis Centers.

40 Days For Life describes the Constant Vigils as “a prayerful witness to the clinic’s patients and employees, and to the entire community, that evil is in our midst and that with God’s help, it will be defeated”. The power of these vigils is seen in every campaign as women turn away from or leave the clinics, often tearfully thanking those praying for their babies. Clinic workers walk out on their jobs and join the vigils. One clinic typically shuts its doors permanently.

Each campaign undoubtedly also achieves many unheralded successes across America. Women contemplating abortion suddenly reconsider the horrible ramifications of the “choice” they were about to make. Despondent women somehow receive the joy of hope and realize that they are not alone and have numerous ways to choose life for their babies.

We were meant to live during this time
As Christians we know that God has had a plan for each of us that reaches back into eternity. We were meant to live during this time. We have been given the challenge of stemming the tide of the modern age’s slaughter of the innocents. And through the prayers and efforts of millions of Americans we are meeting that challenge.

Only God knows how many vigil volunteers, how much fasting or how many personal prayers are required to save one more baby from dismemberment, decapitation or poisoning in a abortion clinic.

Let your voice be heard in heaven over these 40 Days.
